Health in an Aging Society

Tuesday October 1, 2024

This month I have been re-reading the CMO’s 2023 report, Health in an Aging Society and regardless of your professional sector, healthcare, architecture, town planning, social science, politics, medical science, there is something here for everyone. For the clinicians among you this is essential reading.

In essence this is a strategic overview of how small shifts in our focus and way of thinking could revolutionise how we support improved public health and the ‘art of medicine’ through rapid scientific advance – see the fantastic section on research and geroscience.

‘The health economics for geroscience are compelling: in 2021 one study estimated that extending healthy life expectancy by just 1 year would yield $38 trillion for the US Economy alone”

It means a pivot in our priorities and a shift in the way we conceptualise disease and service provision. From a coaching perspective it demonstrates perfectly that solutions which promote a real shift in our behaviours are those that bring about measurable and sustainable change.
